Free Calls via Google

Friday, August 27th, 2010

I read online that Google is not letting users make free telephone calls anywhere in the U. S. and for a very low cost if you need to make an international call.

I haven’t tried it yet – have you called anyone using Google yet? Does it work for home phones and business phones? Does it work for cell phones? I’m not sure how it works but I’m willing to learn!

Found It!

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Here is the video I watched last January when everyone was planning SuperBowl parties.I found it on Youtube a few minutes ago.

The video shows you how to pull the bones out of a chicken wing cleanly and easily so you can dunk the meat in dipping sauce and eat it without worrying about the bones.

Chicken Wings

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

There was a video on Youtube that some guy made about the proper way to eat chicken wings. I watched it a long time ago, but I have to admit, it didn’t sink in. I guess because his technique was so very different from anything that I’ve ever tried.

So I’m cooking chicken wings tonight and I will enjoy eating them regardless of whether it is the proper way or not. But maybe I’ll cruise over to Youtube and see if I can find that video again before our fingers get all sticky.

Come Again

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Today I learned about retargeting and remarketing. All my life I have been in sales and marketing and it just goes to show that no matter how long you have been in an industry or a field of work, you are always learning new things.

Marketing is different from sales and both are different from public relations. Yet they are all related and they all help achieve the same end result. So now there is a new dimension to this trio of business makers and revenue generators. Retargeting companies is the next horizon for my marketing team and the internet experts that we work with to bring in customers from our company web site.

Remarketing means to present an opportunity again. For example, someone comes to your website, then leaves and looks at other web sites. While at another website, they happen to see a banner ad for your company. It looks familiar and maybe even promising. So they click on the ad and go back to your web site. That is the moment that you want to swoop in and close the sale!

Algebra vs Basic Math

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

My son’s school counselor had a chance to chit chat for a few minutes this morning when I dropped the kids off at school. For some reason the school bus driver drove right past us this morning and did not stop. I was so angry! I don’t know what her problem is, maybe it was a distraction or a temporary blonde moment. But we were right there sitting in my car at the stop sign and she drove right by.

So I drove the kids to school myself and walked in to complain to whoever would listen. Which was no one but the counselor. *sigh*

After I fussed about my kids being left stranded at the bus stop, I asked her about the math courses available in the elementary and middle school grades and how do they determine if a child is ready for Pre Algebra as opposed to the basic math? I know they are always testing the kids throughout the year and I wonder if anyone really applies the test results to an individual kid who might be ready for an advanced placement?

The counselor said that most tests for advanced placement are initiated by parental request. So I told her that I would like my son tested – he is a wiz at math, he understands math well beyond the 3rd grade basic math that is in the regular curriculum. He understands  Prime numbers and other advanced concepts. I don’t want him to be held back when he is at his optimum time for absorbing new concepts and learning.

Last year the kids learned addition and subtraction, then they moved on to multiplication and division. At the end of the second grade, they were beginning to work with fractions. But these first two weeks of the 3rd grade are reviewing basic addition and subtraction all over again. My son is bored with it and ready to move forward.

On the way to school this morning, I asked him how to divide two different sets of numbers and add the results together for the answer. He did it in his head! I think that is awesome for an 8 year old!

Homework Already

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

The school bus was really late getting to our bus stop today. I guess the first day of school has a lot of confusion for teachers and bus drivers in making sure all the right kids get put on the right buses. They were over a half hour later than any of last year’s drop offs. I was getting really worried.

The kids were so excited to get home and tell me all about their first day. Would you believe they each have a homework assignment already? Good grief! These are just little kids in Kindergarten and the 3rd grade! Why do they need homework?

Back to Math

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Knowing that school was starting today, I began working with both kids last week on little refresher exercises. I started them each on reading a book every day and using flash cards to get them thinking about math. My daughter is learning basic addition and my son is learning division.

It is important to me for both of them to get a strong foundation in reading and math. To help them with math, the flash cards about all I can do. For more advanced  Math help I am going to use a free online tutoring system that I discovered last year.

My son was struggling with some of the multiplication tables, so I signed him up for Homework help with Tutor Vista. It worked great and got him over the hump with both multiplication and division concepts and sight drills.

When he gets a little older, I know he will want to take advantage of their Algebra help, too. Even though I took all the advanced math classes when I was in school, they are using totally different methods of teaching math to kids today. I can help with finding the right answers to their homework problems, but the step by step process is what they are trying to teach in Algebra and I don’t believe that my way of working through the problems is the way they want my son to do his work.

I don’t understand why it would be different, but I looked at my nephew’s Algebra workbook last year and it does not look anything like the textbooks that we had to use in school. So the last thing I want to do is cause any conflict or confusion for my son with his math teachers.

First Day of School!

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Today was the big day for kids in our county. The first day of school!

Usually my kids ride the bus by walking down to a bus stop a couple of blocks from our house. But this morning I wanted to drive them to school and walk them in to find their new classrooms and meet their teachers.

It was a zoo! There were over a hundred cars all trying to get a parking spot. Hundreds of kids were milling about, dragging their moms by the hand and jumping up and down in excitement.

We had a bit of a head start on the whole thing because I drove to the school last night and found the classroom assignments taped tot he front door. So we already knew the names of the new teachers and what the classroom numbers were for each of the kids.

They will ride the bus home and since it is only a half day of school today, I think they will be getting home around 11:30 this morning. I can’t wait to hear all about their first day!

Sunday Comics

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

When I picked up the Sunday newspaper from the end of the driveway and brought it in the house, there was a scuffle of activity as both of my kids wanted to get the comics section. That was really cool – I love the idea of my kids wanting to read. I have to figure out a good way to keep track of who’s turn it is to get the comics first. I want to be fair about taking turns, too.

My favorite comic has always been Peanuts, by Charles Schultz. I love Snoopy and even won a big stuffed Snoopy at a carnival when I was just a kid. I still have that Snoopy dog – he’s one of my treasures.

The Comics

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

My son just discovered the Sunday comics. He will be going into the third grade next year and is already reading at the 4th grade level. I’m so proud of his reading ability – learning to read is probably the most important thing to learn in the primary grades. Also, when you read the comics, you develop a sense of humor and learn what is considered funny in our society, and what is not.

Now when we get the Sunday newspaper, I fish for the Living and Style sections and my son goes for the Sunday comics. I guess my daughter will be wanting to read the comics soon, too. Then we’ll be learning to share the comics or take turns. LOL
