Thanksgiving Diet

Friday, November 28th, 2008

As much as I love all the traditional Thanksgiving foods, I have been trying really hard to stick to a healthy diet and cannot afford to blow it today. I have great resolve to eat healthy today. I plan to have lots of roast turkey and will stay away from any foods that are white or yellow. Unfortunately that means no mashed potatoes and gravy, but I will allow myself to have a tiny taste of sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are one of the healthiest vegetables you can serve, but all the extra stuff you put on them like syrup or butter with sugar and cinnamon can cancel out the health benefits. So I try to keep it to a tiny dash of butter with just salt and pepper – no marshmallows or carmelized nut toppings for meĀ  this year.

Anyway, I’m sure I will have plenty of great food and hope that you do, too. And if you are dieting, take it easy on the high calories and high fats, and you won’t have big regrets the next morning.

Colder Day and Colder Nights

Monday, November 10th, 2008

There is a definite change in the weather now. The days are so much shorter and they are colder, too. The nights are so cold now that leaving the bedroom window open is not a good idea anymore. We had to turn on the heat about a week ago, and this morning I had to put on a winter coat before leaving for work.

There has been fog in the mornings, which has been very eerie. We rarely get fog – maybe 7 or 8 mornings total for the whole year. So it is worth noticing when we see it.

The temps got down in the low 30’s last night. We had frost on the lawn and the windshields of the cars when we left for work at 7:00. That is a sure sign that winter is just around the corner!

Change for America

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Congratulations to Barack Obama on his victory tonight. It is a huge step forward for America to have a black president. I think the race was very close and that his election has surprised a lot of old timers. I hope that he follows through on his promises and brings good things to our country.
