Music on the West Coast

One of my guy friends in the music business has been dealing with dental issues and since most musicians have no dental insurance, the prospect of a huge dental bill has kept him scared off from going. But he couldn’t put it off much longer, so he took off last week and flew out to Oregon where his daughter lives. Surprisingly, his daughter is married to a dentist! And, of course, his dental work will be free because of family.

Don’t you find it odd that it is cheaper to fly to Oregon than to go see a local dentist? Because he is a musician and has flown all over the country, I think he is using his frequent flyer miles to go to Oregon instead of paying for a full fare round trip ticket.

He told me that his daughter shares his musical talents and is a great guitar player and budding songwriter. She has taken him around the Portland area and introduced her local musician friends to him. He chatted me up on Facebook last night to tell me that he is impressed with the local music scene. I never really thought of Portland as a music scene, but honestly, music can be found just about everywhere.

Hi daughter has a son who wants to get into music, too. Rather than learning on a guitar, he needs to learn how to read music and more about composition, so they plan on giving him piano lessons as one of his Christmas gifts. Piano Lessons Portland will teach any age and ability, and they feel that 10 years old is a good age to take the music lessons seriously and apply himself. After about 3 years of piano lessons, he can switch to guitar if he wants to, but at least he will have a strong foundation in composition and arrangement.

I think they are doing the right thing. When my son starts showing an interest in music, I will probably follow the same plan. He isn’t old enough yet – but soon!
